Jun 9, 2016- Multiple layers of sand and mud have impeded the task of locating the remains of at least 128 people, including foreign tourists, who were buried after the earthquake-induced landslides washed away an entire settlement in Langtang.
As many as 208 people, including 22 foreign tourists, were killed in the disaster in April last year in Langtang, while 128 people, along with 21 foreign tourists, are still missing in the area.
The Nepal Army, accompanied by a team of geologists, failed to make any headway
in the fourth round of search operation that concluded on Tuesday.
Amy personnel from Narayan Dal Battalion in Rasuwa deployed for the security of Langtang National Park, backed by a team of experts from Tribhuvan University, had carried out the search to find the missing persons.
The 10-day-long fourth round of search operation had started on May 29.
Among the missing are 10 Nepal Army personal from the Narayan Dal Batallion itself.
“Multiple layers of sand and mud obstructed our efforts to locate the bodies of missing people including our friends,” said Brig Gen Tara Bahadur Karki, spokesperson for the Nepal Army.
The search operation has become difficult due to lack of equipment that can detect the remains buried under the earth.
“We are looking for advanced equipment. Next round of search operation will begin once we get the required equipment,” added Brig Gen Karki.
At some places, the sand and mud layer is as high as 10 metres.
According to the Post Disaster Need Assessment prepared by the National Planning Commission immediately after the April 25 earthquake last year, Langtang was among the worst affected single settlement.
